A strong sustainable approach targeting a high Green Star rating for the reconstruction of Naenae Swimming Pool and Fitness Center has seen Hutt City Council approved for the third green, social and sustainable loan to a New Zealand City Council. Local Government Funding Agency (LGFA).
LGFA specializes in local government funding providing effective funding to 75 member councils across New Zealand. The new Green, Social and Sustainable (GSS) finance program, launched late last year, provides cost benefits to local government projects focused on environmental and social well-being. Only three councils have been successfully approved for these loans. The new GSS loan will save Hutt City Council approximately $20,500 per year and approximately $600,500 over the next thirty years.
Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry welcomed the news.
“We have always said that we would do this project differently, and that includes putting our environment at the center of the reconstruction. The Green Loan demonstrates that we are delivering on our commitment to deliver more sustainable projects in our city,” said Mayor Campbell Barry.
Hutt City Council Chief Executive Jo Miller said caring for and protecting the environment was one of Hutt Council’s six key priorities in the council’s 10-year plan. A key driver in the planning of Naenae’s pool and fitness center was sustainability, not only over the life of the project, but also for the future operation of the facility.
“From the start, we have ensured that this project meets our new sustainable priorities. We are focused on reducing the impact on our environment, providing a state-of-the-art facility that meets the needs of our community, reduces ongoing operational costs and achieves a New Zealand 5 Green Star rated aquatic building Green Building Council – a first in New Zealand. The new pool will be 65% larger than the old one and will be much more energy efficient with up to 53% reduction in energy consumption.
