BENGALURU: Two final year students, including a girl, unsuccessfully attempted to rob a 65-year-old woman by throwing chili powder in her eyes. The incident happened when the victim, KT Gayathri, who is staying at the BHEL Officers Colony, was returning home from his morning walk in a park outside his house in Nandini Layout. She noticed the accused duo standing at a distance next to a scooter and talking to each other.

“As the victim was walking past them, the girl among the two defendants, came from behind and threw chilli powder in the eyes of the elderly woman. The defendant then tried to rip off her gold chain. The victim, however, managed to hold on to her gold chain and screamed for help. When a motorcyclist came to her rescue, the accused ran to her male accomplice and escaped with him on a scooter,” said a policeman.

Investigations revealed that the duo got a loan through an instant loan app to invest in e-commerce. After suffering business losses, the two were unable to repay the loan. They had even borrowed money from friends. As the pressure to repay the loan grew, the two decided to rob the old woman. Police said executives of the instant loan app from which the two took the loan were pressuring them to repay the amount.

Police zeroed in on the scooter’s registration number through nearby CCTV footage and caught the two. The incident happened last Saturday between 10:15 and 10:30 a.m. in front of the BHEL Officers Colony on the 25th Main Road at Nandini Layout. A case of attempted theft under section 393 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the two defendants who have been taken into custody. Nandini Layout Police have registered a case.
