Simple ways to save money in 2022 – top tips to improve your finances

5. Remember to haggle

Even once you have received an offer from a company for goods or services, it may not be its cheapest price. If you found a cheaper deal online, you can use this as a bargaining tool to lower your quote. This does not only apply to your insurance policies, but also to your phone, internet and TV plans.

6. Before you buy anything, see if you can get it for free

Many people will want to treat themselves to a new sofa or a new dining table in January. But the good news is that there will be many who get rid of the old ones.

Often these are put into play by community groups such as Freecycle, Freegle and Gumtree. You can find a whole range of free treasures here: from record players to washing machines. It’s also a good way to get rid of your own when you find what you’re looking for.

7. Otherwise, buy used instead of new

Charity shops have been flooded with stock this year as everyone has emptied their attics and cupboards during lockdown. By buying clothes, household items, or books you need from charity stores, you’ll not only be paying a fraction of the store price, but you’ll also be donating your money to a good cause. Some charities, such as Oxfam and the British Heart Foundation, also have online shops.

8. And sell your old stuff online

Getting into all those used items will likely mean you have to get rid of some old ones to make room. You can sell old clothes online on sites like eBay or apps like Depop.

There are other specialty sites, including Mazuma Mobile, Music Magpie, and Zapper, that will give you money for your old cell phones, CDs, DVDs, and games. eBay is a good one-stop-shop for selling almost anything.

9. Rent your car or your driveway

More and more people are ditching public transport for the safety of their own car, and you could make some money by offering your empty driveway as a parking space.

There are a number of apps and websites that let you do this, including Kerb, JustPark, and Stashbee. Most allow you to set your own price, although some companies accept a discount. The monthly price to rent a parking space in London can be £300 or more.

You can also lend your car if you don’t plan to drive a lot. This will save you money on fuel and mean that someone else is essentially paying for your running costs. A car lending app, Turo, calculates that its users earn over £500 a month by leasing their car. Getaround and Hiyacar are other companies that allow you to do the same.
